Scotland

I have always visited Scotland in the months of April May or June. I have an aversion to midges - they love me. Until 1990 the main areas I had visited were the Isle of Arran, the West Coast and some of the Inner Hebrides but after that the annual pilgrimage was to Sutherland and, more specifically, Assynt wherein lies some fascinating limestone scenery and several intriguing cave systems. The scuba diving in the sea lochs is excellent. The caves can be seen elsewhere - these are the landscapes of Sutherland. The mountains here aren't that high (few Munro's) but they rear out of a flat boggy plain like whale backs and provide challenging walks.

View south from Achiltibuie with the Summer Isles on the right. In the distance on the left is a Hydroponicum that grows fruit and vegetables for the nearby Summer Isles Hotel

View south from Rieff a popular site for rock climbing and I think bird watching

Waterfall at Inverkirkaig south of Lochinver. There is an excellent bookshop at the start of the walk to the falls!

View from Knockan Crag with Ben More Assynt covered in snow to the right, and Cansip on the far left. Note the lush green patch around the village of Elphin caused by the presence of limestone.

Closer view of Elphin -the GSG (Grampian Speleological Group) have a well appointed field hut here, nestling under the crag in the middle distance.

The view from the GSG hut ( a converted croft). On the left is Knockan Crag then in sequence are the mountains of Ben Coigeach, Cul Mho,r Suilven and Canisp. Probably the best view from a caving hut in Britain.

In the valley behind the GSG hut looking towards Suilven. The area is known as the Knockan Basin.

A conveniently reflective loch provides a nice panorama of the mountains south of Elphin including Ben Coigeach on the left and Stac Pollaidh on the right.

Gazing into the depths of Corrieshalloch Gorge a few miles from Ullapool. A wobbly suspension bridge crosses the deepest point - not for sufferers from vertigo.

Skye

The largest of the Inner Hebrides, the Isle of Skye is steeped in history. Dunvegan Castle to the north has been continously inhabited for something like 10 centuries. In the south the wild Alpine looking Cuillin ridge provides a challenge to climbers and walkers. For the less active tourist the dramatic scenery to the north east around Storr Rock and Quiraining creates an indelible impression. Since the construction of the road bridge at the Kyle of Lochalsh and, in 2005, the abolition of the bridge toll, the island has become increasingly popular. In additions it has, of course, caves! There is the famous and beautiful Spar Cave a sea cave near Elgol and other systems in the area round Torrin.
