Welcome to my caving world!
For the last 12 years I have been making an annual visit to
Sutherland, in the north west of Scotland, to the region known
as Assynt. Here lie some of the most remote caves in Britain.
Formed in some of the oldest limestones known, amidst magnificent
mountain scenery, the caves are still being explored. The
most exciting discoveries have been made in the last decade.
Here is a world of roaring rivers, foaming cascades, sparkling
stalactites, gigantic gloomy halls and ice age relics in the
form of bear bones. Parts of the caves are only accessible
to cave divers who have penetrated the chilly murky water-filled
tunnels separating the drier sections.
The limestone occurs in patches disrupted by
continental collisions aeons ago. One patch near Cape Wrath
contains the huge sea cave at Smoo near Durness where the
public can explore underworld for a short distance.
Apart from the caves of Sutherland this site
has pages on caves in other parts of the UK. Just click on
the images below to take you to the appropriate page.
